Commissioned for Socially Distanced Yet Creatively Connected, an exhibition in response to the global pandemic and inspired by our collective experience of lockdown.
Artist's statement:
Lockdown for me was a wonderful opportunity to sit back and look at my career spanning the last 25 years. During Lockdown I didn't feel inspired to paint or even research a next body of work. The unsettling nature of the pandemic affected my creativity and I felt unable to paint.
It was the first time I have allowed myself this type of reflection.
What I found myself focusing on and following was the incredible leadership of the Labour party and of course Jacinda Ardern. I felt a huge sense of community, pride and love for Aotearoa.
Post lockdown I tentatively reconnected with my studio space and then dealt with the physicality of actually making work! What followed was a renewed energy and joy in what I was creating.
I have painted an abstract and a Landscape for this show. The abstract speaks of a great appreciation for the people running this amazing little country and the Landscape is an observation of the sheer beauty that surrounds us each and every day.
COVID 19 was so hard in so many ways but I think it has truly united us all as a nation of 5 Million.
