THIS WORK CAN BE VIEWED AT OUR MANGONUI GALLERY, 80 WATERFRONT DRIVE

"This lush forest scene is inspired by my time spent in New Zealand.

One of my most favourite past times was to walk in nature. I was fortunate enough to live close by to a small walking track and the constantly changing hues of greens on a daily basis made me return day after day. Spending time in those spaces became my walking meditation. My mind stopped jumping from thought to thought and eventually came into sync with the slow pulsating rhythm of those forest walks. I stopped trying to do anything and was so very content to JUST BE.

Hence I entitled this piece HUMAN-BEING

I wished to portray my feeling of what I experienced in those silent moments.

Just Be

No need to constantly fill every waking hour with doing. Just be. Human-Being"

About the Artist

Nessi Penman

Nessi Penman is a contemporary artist known for her expertise in impressionist impasto painting. Her artwork serves as an invitation for viewers to immerse themselves in the captivating beauty of nature. Penman's deep admiration for the environment and her belief in the interconnectedness of all living beings greatly influence her life and artistic expression. Through her paintings, she aims to capture the profound interconnectedness of life and convey the significance of experiencing and cherishing the natural world. In the fast-paced digital era we live in, there is a noticeable absence of physical contact and genuine connection among individuals. Many of us spend our days surrounded by concrete and technology, feeling disconnected from the natural environment that surrounds us. Penman firmly believes that, much like plants, humans also require contact with fresh air, sunlight, and the vibrant life present in nature to truly thrive and feel alive. With her artwork, she strives to create moments of peace and tranquillity. Her intention is to reconnect us with the serenity of nature and remind us of the Earth's vital role in sustaining our existence, from the microscopic phytoplankton in the sea to the towering trees in the forests. Consider the scent that fills the air when walking through a forest. Among the various aromatic notes, a significant portion actually originates from the soil, especially after rainfall. But what is the soil? It is the result of decaying matter, the remnants of fallen trees and diseased plants. These plants, with their once well ordered molecular structures, dissolve into disorder as they return to the earth. Paradoxically, it is through this process of decay that new life emerges and thrives. The new trees sprout from the essence of decomposed matter. When you take a bite of an apple, you create chaos. The apple, with its meticulously structured molecular composition, succumbs to disorder as you chew and break it down within your digestive system. Your body then absorbs the vital nutrients, incorporating them into its own well-organised structure. The food is destroyed, chaos ensues, and yet, life is sustained and perpetuated. Many people experience a profound sense of being and inner peace after enduring a period of disorder or chaos. Penman's artistic technique involves the skilful application of heavy impasto layers of oil paint, resulting in textured and multi-dimensional artwork. Through her paintings, she aspires to evoke a sense of tranquillity and foster a deep appreciation for the natural world. She hopes that viewers will be able to tap into their own innate creative spirit as they immerse themselves in her art. Ultimately, her aim is to help individuals rediscover their innate connection to nature and the paradise in which we reside.
